about

Constant Listener,

I usually take the stance that music should be self-explanatory, and that if it requires context for enjoyment, it probably is a flaw of the work.

Having said that, let me now explain my new album to you.

It needs one, because it's such a malformed, noisy, sloppy thing. A few years ago, I got a $50 First Act used kids' drum kit off Craigslist, just to mess around with and try to pick up a new skill. I really should've learned how to play when I was in my early 20's, but I got stuck for the next two decades in bands with a lefty drummer, so I never could stay late after practice to bumble around on his kit. And years of apartment living meant no Bonzo for Tonezo.

Anyway, I was finally in a house with a basement, so I endeavored to live out my dream of being a percussive god. I spent some time learning the ways of the beatmasters on this 3/4-size piece of near-garbage, and, when I finally matriculated from "beginner" to "novice," I figured it was time I gift my gifts to the world.

I thought: I'm gonna make a GBV album. I'm going Uncle Acid on you. Neil Young. I'm doing my version of Self's Gizmodgery, an album made with toy instruments that I don't care about or listen to at all but that I like the idea of. Time for a super-loose, grimy basement record!

Unfortunately, as there exists a fine line between "clever" and "stupid," there also exists a fine line between "lo-fi" and "shitty-sounding." I believe I have now crossed that line. Repeatedly. I thought I could make a record where I play a child's drum set poorly, and it would end up being uniquely enjoyable. I was deluded. Oh, to be able to blame substance abuse for such a misadventure!

I would like to apologize for how bad this record sounds. I know I can do better -- I just chose not to. It is a mutant child I had long ago banished to the dungeon in shame, but the pandemic caused me to look at it afresh with a kind of affection and help it make its way into the world. I now realize it was likely the effects of isolation, lost work, fear, anxiety, and inertia conspiring to make me think this was worth completing.

I was bored, basically. And this was 3/4 done. So I finished it. That's how most great albums get made, you know.

Don't get me wrong -- I am proud of the compositions on here. Some of these tunes are among my best. Just try to imagine them being recorded by someone who knows what they're doing in a real studio. They'd really be great, like that. But they never will be, because I have shat, and now I am getting off the pot. This album is a mess, but it's my mess, and I am taking responsibility for it.

If you get some enjoyment out of this record, that would make me happy. But if you immediately shut it off and wonder what happened to me, I will certainly understand that reaction. I wonder that, sometimes, too.

Sorry, everyone. Fun's over.

-Tony
